Episode #227

Publishing Your Backlog Of Papers [Masterclass Replay]

Are you overwhelmed by your backlog of papers? Today’s episode is a master class in clearing your pipeline. Most academics get trapped in a cycle of fear and blame that stalls their writing process and keeps them from creating the career they want.

MORE DETAILS

My master class on publishing your backlog of papers addresses the critical mindset shift you need to make to free up your pipeline. I also discuss the top three mistakes academics make when publishing papers and offer corrective strategies. Finally, I introduce the Navigate Program and explain how this professional development program helps academics create sustainable writing practices and a flowing publication pipeline.

If you struggle with time or project management, this episode is for you! Learn how to get more papers published and foster a mindset of abundance.

The Mindset Shift Holding Your Back

The primary mindset shift you need to make to publish your backlog of papers is to stop blaming yourself. Blame shows up in these three ways:

  • Shiny Object Syndrome: You have a lot of things partially done, and when you get an idea for a new project, your focus jumps to that.
  • You Say Yes Too Much: You think you need to say ‘No’ more to cut down the backlog of papers.
  • Motivation Problem: You blame procrastination or lack of attention/interest for your backlog of papers.

But the problem isn’t you! It is the racist, patriarchal culture that academia fosters and models, causing your backlog of papers. You must shift your mindset by taking the blame off yourself to publish more.

3 Mistakes Academics Make When Publishing Papers (How to Fix Them)

Mistake #1: You think you just need time to get to the backlog of papers.

Strategy: Learn project and time management skills and implement them through consistent practices so you can maintain boundaries around your time. You need a sustainable writing practice to stop and start without shame or guilt. More time won’t solve the problem if you can’t use that time effectively.

Mistake #2: You blame collaborators and students for slowing down your pipeline.

Strategy: Master your writing project management skills so that you can be a leader when you write with others. Develop your own systems and practices so that you can control everything in a collaboration.

Mistake #3: You’ll have time in the future to get to your writing.

Strategy: You become the designer of your career. Getting tenure does not automatically improve your writing practice or fix project management skills. You must own your agency and stop reacting to other people’s problems.
