Pipeline + Practice = Flow

In this episode, I explain how pipeline + practice = flow. Learn how having a clear, organized publication pipeline and a well-defined writing practice can help you consistently move your projects forward and get them out into the world. I’ll dive into why both of these elements are crucial for academic scholars to master and how having a clear plan for your projects alongside an intentional approach to your writing can unlock productivity and creativity. I’ll also talk about an exciting opportunity, my Spacious Writing Retreat. This intimate retreat is designed to help you refine your publication pipeline and writing practice in a supportive, immersive setting.
MORE DETAILS
If you’re a professor struggling to balance multiple projects, feeling stuck in your writing routine, or looking to bring more flow and consistency to your work, this episode is for you. Whether you’re looking for actionable strategies or are curious about the writing retreat experience, I will give you the tools and inspiration to address the problems with your writing practice and publications head-on.
What is a Publication Pipeline?
Your publication pipeline is a high-level, multi-project plan showing exactly where your projects stand at each stage, from ideation to publication. It’s not just a list of tasks. Your publication pipeline is a visual map of the steps your work goes through, including data collection, analysis, drafting, or revising. A clear sense of where each project is and what steps remain is key to keeping everything moving smoothly and avoiding bottlenecks. You need to be able to assess and manage multiple projects at once, and that’s what the pipeline helps you do.
What is a Writing Practice?
A writing practice is a deliberate, repeatable routine that you develop to support your writing. It’s not just about sitting down to write. A key element of a sustainable writing practice is designing a session that works for you. From when and where you write to the tools and techniques you use, your practice should help you get into a flow state, stay focused, and meet your goals. A solid writing practice fosters a positive relationship with your writing, making it easier to stay motivated and productive, even when things get tough.
The Spacious Writing Retreat
If you want to dive deeper into both your publication pipeline and writing practice, my Spacious Writing Retreat is the perfect place to do that. Taking place in San Juan, Puerto Rico, this five-day retreat combines writing time, coaching, and a curriculum focused on refining your writing practices. This year, I am keeping attendance at a small, intimate group of seven participants. I reduced the size of the retreat to give you personalized attention, help you clear your academic backlog, and reignite your passion for writing. The retreat offers a peaceful, beautiful environment where you can focus, reflect, and connect with fellow scholars, all while enjoying the serenity of the Dreamcatcher Hotel.

“The publication pipeline is a high-level multi-project plan. This means it is not just a list of the projects you’re working on or need to work on. The publication pipeline visually represents the process your work needs to go through to go from idea to publication.”
“I think there is really nothing better than a retreat when your writing practice needs a reset – when it needs a boost, when you need to find joy that’s been lost in the process of writing. Because we can get really frustrated even if we love writing, or if we did love writing at some point, we can feel frustrated with our writing practice because we never get to have it. We never get to do it! So, writing retreats can be such a great way to reset.”
