What to do if you can’t go on a writer’s retreat

by | Sep 4, 2017 | academic writing, mindset, publishing, writer's retreat

Imagine yourself on a writer’s retreat. No committee meetings. No teaching. No grading (weeeee!!!!). No meals to prepare. No small humans or pets to care for. Just you, your writing project, and the focus you’ve needed for so long.

But let’s get real. A writer’s retreat is just that: a retreat. An escape. And though the time can really renew and restore you–and push your work forward–realistically we can’t afford such a multiple-day escape more than once a year (twice tops).

As I’ve been learning more and more about the world of online teaching (and as the tools have been getting better and better), I’ve been exploring the idea of virtual writer’s retreats. I’m super excited to announce the first one, a FREE mini retreat to take place from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 8.

Here’s how it works: we’ll all be in a secret Facebook group. We’ll follow an agenda just like any conference, alternating mini-webinars (via Facebook live) and blocks of writing time. If you can’t block off the whole time you can jump in and out as you like. The mini-webinars will be there waiting for you when you jump back on. If you can join live, then you’ll be able to ask questions and interact during the live stream. Throughout the day we’ll have posts where you can report your progress and frustrations. I’ll also share quick tips, strategies, and motivation. We’ll be able to interact on Twitter using the hashtag #virtualwritersretreat. The idea is to give you that motivational push you need to move the needle on your academic publishing.

Sign up here to reserve your spot, then scroll down for the agenda:

Here’s the agenda. There’s still time to tweak it, so I’d love to hear your suggestions in the comments!
